McGuinness Named Head Men's Basketball Coach at Hartwick

  July 2, 2009
Hartwick Head Coach Todd McGuinness

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick College is pleased to announce Todd McGuinness has been hired as head men's basketball coach.

A former assistant men's basketball coach for Hartwick from 2002-2004, McGuinness spent the last three seasons as the assistant men's basketball coach at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Case Western competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA), considered one of the premier Division III men's basketball conferences in the country, producing the last two NCAA Division III champions. Prior to his three-year stint at Case Western, McGuinness spent two seasons (2004-2006) as the assistant coach at Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

"I am pleased to welcome Coach McGuinness as our new Head Men's Basketball Coach at Hartwick College," said Debbie Warren, Athletic Director at Hartwick College. "I have every confidence in his abilities to build on the successes of Coach [Paul] Culpo. Coach McGuinness has a true understanding of the tradition that is Hartwick basketball, and the competitiveness of Empire 8 athletics. We look forward to his arrival with great enthusiasm."

McGuinness, who emerged from a pool of more than 150 applicants, becomes the 19th head coach in the 80-year history of the men's basketball program at Hartwick. In the 2002-03 season McGuinness served under the tutelage of Tim McGraw '88, and in 2003-04 for first-year head coach Paul Culpo.

"I would like to thank Debbie Warren and the search committee for giving me this great opportunity," McGuinness stated. "I am honored to once again be a part of the great basketball tradition here at Hartwick. After spending two years at the College as an assistant coach, I know Hartwick College is a special place both academically and athletically. It is an exciting time for the men's basketball program after last season's ECAC Championship. I want to keep building off that momentum and compete for an Empire 8 Conference Championship."

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, McGuinness played four seasons of collegiate basketball at Bethany College (WV) where he received his bachelor's degree in physical education (K-12) in 2002. He was a three-year starter and a co-captain his junior and senior seasons. McGuinness helped lead the Bison to two President's Athletic Conference (PAC) championships (2001 and 2002), consecutive postseason appearances in the ECAC Tournament, and the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2002. Prior to Bethany, McGuinness was a three-year player at Gateway High School, where he was a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Section first-team selection in 1998.
