Hawks Split to Open Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament Play

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick College's volleyball team opened its season Friday night splitting a pair of matches in at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament at Lambros Arena. The Hawks ran into a tough City College of New York squad in their opener, falling in three straight sets. The team, however, recovered and swept Husson University in three to even up its record heading into the second day of competition tomorrow.

'Wick was only able to muster 12 kills in its first match against the Beavers in a 25-16, 25-15, 25-13 setback. Sophomore Courtney Desmond (Cortland Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) led Hartwick with four and senior Darcy Dolge (La Grande, OR/La Grande) added three. Defensively, Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) contributed seven digs and freshman Tori Beck (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) added five in her first collegiate match.

The Hawks came back to take their second match over Husson in three straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, and 26-16. Dolge led the way with nine kills and 11 assists. Desmond and freshman Chelsea Jordan (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) each contributed six with Desmond also adding five aces. Freshman Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) paced 'Wick in assists with 16. Mausert reached double figures in digs with 11 and freshman Briana Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) notched seven.

CCNY leads the Group A standings with a 2-0 record after day one. Union College sits in first place in Group B with a pair of wins over Oswego and St. Lawrence. The Dutchwomen downed the Lakers 25-18, 25-3, 25-14 and needed four sets to defeat the Saints, 25-9, 23-25, 25-15, 25-14.

Play continues tomorrow with matches starting at 10 a.m. at Lambros Arena. The consolation and championship matches are scheduled for later in the day at 4:30 p.m.
