Q: Approximately how many students who apply are accepted?

A: Each year, Hartwick receives approximately 2,500 applications and offers admission to about 1,600 of those students. 

Q: What information is used in evaluating admission candidates?

A: Applicants are evaluated on the strength of high school curriculum, GPA, rank, SAT I/ACT scores if submitted, recommendations, and school and community involvement. The middle 50 percent SAT I score for students entering in fall 2002 is 1050-1220, while the middle 50 percent ACT score for students entering in fall 2002 is 21-27. More about criteria…

Q: What is the student body at Hartwick like?

A: About 1,480 students are enrolled at Hartwick; approximately 44 percent are men, 56 percent are women. Just under 60 percent of Hartwick students come from the state of New York.

Q: Do students have a lot of direct contact with the faculty?

A: Yes. The student-to-faculty ratio is just 12 to 1. And the average class size is approximately 18 students, so students get quality time from their instructors. More about student-faculty collaboration and research… 

Q: Is an interview required?

A: No, but we recommend them. There are a number of interview possibilities ranging from an on-campus interview to an off-campus interview to an interview conducted by an admissions volunteer. Interviews give you a chance to learn more about Hartwick and give us a chance to get to know you. Plus, an on-campus interview allows you to experience our campus. Q: What is Hartwick’s cost for 2007-08 for entering freshmen?

A: Before financial aid or scholarships, tuition is $31,330; room and board are $8,685; and other fees are $870. More costs…  

Q: What kinds of financial aid or scholarships are available?

A: Through federal, state, and Hartwick sources, approximately 78 percent of our students receive financial aid. All students interested in financial aid must fill out both Hartwick’s financial aid form and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition, Hartwick provides merit-based scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. More about financial aid … 

Q: What are the application and decision-letter deadlines?

A: For first-year students, our Early Decision I deadline is November 15; the Early Decision II deadline is January 15; and the regular admission deadline is February 15. Under the regular admission plan, decision letters are mailed in mid-March. Be sure to note that if you’re applying for a place in the art or music departments, you’ll have to meet additional deadlines. Q: What majors do Hartwick College students typically study?

A: The top five majors for Hartwick students are Biology, Psychology, Management, English, and Nursing. Nearly one-third of our students major in the Social Sciences, one-quarter in the Humanities, 17 percent in the Physical/Life and Computational Sciences, and 17 percent major in Management/Accounting. 

Hartwick offers an education program, including childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence education programs in conjunction with an academic discipline. In addition, students majoring in a resident discipline of the College may participate in the pre-med (including pre-dental and pre-veterinary) and pre-health, pre-law, and pre-engineering programs.  

You also may design your own major through Hartwick’s Individual Student Program (ISP). Over the years, ISP students have majored in communications, marketing, criminal justice,  international relations programs, and many other areas. More about our majors and minors… 

Q: Do many Hartwick students go on to graduate school?

A: Approximately 16 percent of students go on to graduate school immediately following graduation and 40 percent of Hartwick graduates eventually continue their education. More about what our graduates do... 

Q: Does every student at Hartwick really have a computer?

A: Yes. As part of the College’s technology initiative, every student has a notebook computer system with printer, software, and access to the campus network and the Internet.

Q: Does Hartwick offer any off-campus programs?

A: Yes. Students can travel to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central America and in the United States for a variety of programs through our January Term offerings, semesters abroad, or internships. During the 2003 January Term alone, students traveled to the Bahamas, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Russia, Thailand and others. More about study abroad…

Q: Does Hartwick offer ROTC?

A: Not at this time. Hartwick does not have the opportunity for ROTC.

Q: What intercollegiate sports are available for men and women?

A: Sports for men include basketball, cross-country, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, and tennis. Sports for women include  basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, swimming and diving, field hockey, tennis, equestrian, and water polo. More about Hartwick athletics… 

Q: Are there social fraternities and sororities at Hartwick?

A: Yes. There are three fraternities and three sororities. About 12 percent of the students are involved in social Greek organizations. More about Greek Life…
