ONEONTA, NY - Massachusetts College nipped Hartwick by two points, 68-66, on Saturday in the final game of the Tom Greene Memorial Tip-Off Classic at Lambros Arena. The Trailblazers outscored the Hawks 35-29 in the second half to emerge with the victory. Castleton State, which was a 103-89 winner over Cazenovia in the day's first game, came away with the tournament title with a 2-0 record.
Hartwick trailed MCLA by three points with one second left and Martin McCann (Hopewell Junction, NY/Lourdes) heading to the free throw line. He connected on his first attempt and missed the second on purpose in hopes of the Hawks hitting the offensive glass for a potential game-tying put-back. The ball, however, was corralled by the Trailblazers to seal their second victory of the year. The loss for the Hawks is their first of the season.
Jon Greenberg (Antwerp, Belgium/Dennis-Yarmouth) led MCLA on the day with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. He connected on 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Brendan Kordana (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Mike Perreault (Whitinsville, MA/Northbridge) added 14 points.
For the Hawks, Kyle Phillips (Ashland, MA/Ashland) registered team-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds. The senior center was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts. Mark Blazek (Erie, PA/Erie Cathedral) scored 18 points and McCann finished with nine.
Seth Harrington (N. Bennington/Mount Anthony) led five players in double figures for Castleton with 17. Jared Paul (Tampa, FL/Armwood) added 15 points, Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT/W. Rutland) netted 14, all-tournament selection Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT/Rutland) contributed 13 points, and tournament MVP Derrick Faragon (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored 11. With the victory the Spartans improve to 2-1 on the year.
Cazenovia's Dan Holtzman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) scored a game-high 23 points. Matt Phillips (Avon, NY/Avon) added 16. Cameron Smith (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls Lima) was also an all-tourney selection with 10 points on the day.
