McIntyre Resigns as Head Men's Soccer Coach at Hartwick

  January 6, 2010
Ian McIntyre

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick College Director of Athletics Debbie Warren announced Wednesday that head men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre '96 has resigned. McIntyre, who has been the Hawks' leader since 2003, has accepted the head coaching position at Syracuse University.

McIntyre steps down from his post at 'Wick after piloting the program for the past seven seasons. This past year, McIntyre guided Hartwick to a record of 10-4-4 and the program's first appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championship game.

"It is with mixed emotions we say farewell to Ian as our head men's soccer coach here at Hartwick," said Warren. "He is a wonderful coach, teacher, mentor, and friend who will be missed."

"Our partnership with Syracuse in the Mayor's Cup and Ian's love for Hartwick as an alum will make it possible for him to stay in touch with the many friends of Hartwick soccer," added Warren. "This is a wonderful opportunity for him professionally and we wish him every success at Syracuse."

McIntyre led the program to a record of 71-36-25 over his tenure and ranks second all-time in coaching victories at the College. He was named NSCAA New York State Region Coach of the Year in 2004 and Atlantic Soccer Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 after guiding the Hawks to the ASC title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Earlier this year, he broke the 100-win mark for his career after adding 36 wins as head coach at Oneonta State from 1999-2002.

As a player, McIntyre led 'Wick to 52 victories and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in his four seasons. He is one of only 26 All-Americans in program history and was inducted into the Hartwick Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

"After over 15 years as both a student-athlete and a coach here in Oneonta, Hartwick College holds a very special place in my heart," said McIntyre. "I have been blessed to meet many wonderful individuals, and I would especially like to thank our Director of Athletics, Debbie Warren, the entire Athletic Department, and the Oneonta community for ensuring that my time at Hartwick College has been so memorable.

"I have been honored to lead the men's soccer program during the past seven years and I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes both on and off the soccer field," added McIntyre. "I feel that I am leaving the program in very good hands and the leadership of the College will ensure future success. My wife and I have developed many great friendships that we will take with us to Syracuse University. We are excited to start a new chapter in our lives, and we look forward to embracing the challenges that lay ahead."

Hartwick College will immediately conduct a national search for McIntyre's replacement for its Division I men's soccer program.
