Hartwick's Troischt Works with World's Largest Telescope

February 01, 2010

Hartwick College Assistant Professor of Physics Parker Troischt attended a National Science Foundation-funded Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA workshop at the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center  in Arecibo, Puerto Rico this January.

Participants were instructed in topics such as observing with the 305m-radio telescope, data analysis techniques, and the nature of large-scale galaxy surveys.

"The collaboration is conducting a blind extragalactic HI survey exploiting Arecibo's superior sensitivity and angular resolution in order to conduct a census of neutral hydrogen in the local universe over a cosmologically significant volume," Troischt explained. "It is designed to complement the ongoing series of Sloan Digital Sky Surveys using optical telescopes."

Troischt is pictured at right on a 900-ton platform suspended 450 feet above the world's largest reflecting dish.
