Past news

Few liberal arts colleges offer a natural classroom of woodlands, wetlands, and a lake located just eight miles from the main campus.

Since its purchase by the College in 1971, the Pine Lake Environmental Campus has played an integral role in the College's commitment to environmental studies and awareness and to learning that is collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community centered.

Hartwick's Pine Lake Environmental Campus:

  • provides students with opportunities for hands-on research, academic study, and self-discovery. It's a place to learn about the natural environment and history of human land use.
  • offers a residential alternative to campus dorms. Students and guests can live in and learn from a primarily natural setting.
  • provides a place where challenge, reflection, and recreation can lead to personal renewal and growth, appreciation of nature, and responsible environmental stewardship.
  • provides a living laboratory that teaches the college and the larger community how humans can sustain rather than deplete resources and demonstrate environmentally responsible stewardship.
