Middle States Standards
Standard 1: Mission and Goals
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick has a clearly defined mission that defines our work within a broader context of higher education, and that our stated goals are clearly linked to that mission. To be accredited, we must show that our mission and goals are realistic, developed through appropriate collaboration between those who are responsible for the college, and guide our decision-making.
Standard 2: Ethics and Integrity
Middle States views ethics and integrity as the hallmarks of effective higher education institutions. To be accredited, we must show that both internally and externally we are faithful to our mission, we honor our commitments, we adhere to our policies and represent ourselves truthfully.
Standard 3: Design and Delivery of the Student Learning Experience
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick provides our students with learning experiences that are rigorous and coherent. To be accredited, we must show that:
- those who deliver our learning experiences are appropriately trained and effective teachers;
- we describe our programs clearly;
- students are able to complete degree requirements within an expected timeframe;
- we have sufficient resources and learning opportunities to support our programs.
Standard 4: Support of the Student Experience
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick is committed to student retention, persistence, and completion. To be accredited, we must show that we have clearly stated policies and processes to facilitate the success of our students and that we provide an effective support system that is implemented by qualified professionals.
Standard 5: Educational Effectiveness Assessment
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick has a clear, effective system for the periodic assessment of student learning and achievement. To be accredited, we must show that we have clearly stated education goals that are being assessed for effectiveness and that we are using assessment results to make improvements.
Standard 6: Planning, Resources, and Institutional Improvement
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick’s planning processes, resources, and structures are aligned with each other and sufficient to fulfill its mission and goals, to improve, and to respond effectively when opportunities or challenges arise. To be accredited, we must show that our planning and improvement processes are clearly documented and communicated, that our planning and budgeting processes are evidence-based and linked to our mission and goals.
Standard 7: Governance, Leadership and Administration
Middle States would like to know that Hartwick has education as its primary purpose and is governed and administered in a way that allows it to realize its stated mission and goals. To be accredited, we must show that at all levels of governance, we have a clearly articulated and transparent structure that outlines roles, responsibilities, and accountability for decision-making.
