You know you need a resume. You may have even made one when you applied to college.
Your resume is a marketing tool that demonstrates your experience, skills, and ability to do the job better than any other candidate.
You’re unique, and your resume should be too. We don’t recommend that you borrow your parents’, coaches’, or friends’ resumes and insert your name and information into that template. However, there are some basic guidelines you can follow to make sure your resume has all the necessary information.
Keep in mind that your resume is the first impression a potential employer/graduate school will have of you. Your resume should be a clear, concise, and consistent summary of your skills, relevant experiences, and transferable skills. Your resume must grab the attention of your target audience and encourage them to interview you. While it may take you many hours to draft your resume, the person reviewing your resume typically takes no longer than 30 seconds.
You should update your resume at least once per semester. You may also have several versions of your resume, as you will customize it for each different audience. Once you have a draft of the resume, our Career Advisors will look at it with you and provide edits and suggestions. We will do this for you every time you update the document. Stop by the Career Services office in the PSGE Center to schedule a resume review appointment.
