Waleed Farid, new head men's basketball coach

Farid Named New Hartwick College Men’s Basketball Coach

September 14, 2016

On Tuesday, Dr. Kim Fierke announced the hiring of Waleed Farid as the new head men’s basketball coach at Hartwick College. Farid emerged from a pool of nearly 200 applicants to become the 19th head coach in the 87-year history of the program.

Farid has spent the last seven years serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Stevens Institute of Technology. In that time frame, Farid has helped the Ducks to a record of 127-67 and three 20-win seasons.

There is no doubt that we have hired an exceptional leader for our men’s basketball program in Waleed,” Fierke stated. “Through his work at Stevens, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to recruit strong academic and athletic talent that consistently competes at the top of the Empire 8 Conference. He has demonstrated a commanding knowledge of the game of basketball that has brought teams to the NCAA tournament both as a player and a coach. Waleed’s passion and enthusiasm combined with his work ethic will be a positive addition to the men’s basketball program. I am very excited to see this next chapter unfold.”

Farid has been involved in all aspects of the program at Stevens including practice planning, game preparation, implementing in-season and off-season strength and conditioning programs, opponent scouting, team and individual player development, and recruiting. He helped the Ducks to Empire 8 Tournament appearances in six of his seven seasons and two conference regular season titles. Stevens won the ECAC Metro Championship in 2011 and received an at-large berth into the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

“I would like to thank Dr. Fierke and the rest of the search committee for giving me this amazing opportunity,” Farid said. “I am looking forward to joining the Hartwick team and helping the men’s basketball program continue to experience success on and off the court.”

As a student-athlete at Stevens, Farid guided the Ducks to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and the program’s first-ever ECAC Metro title in 2008. He graduated as the program’s career leader in points, rebounds and steals, and still sits top-10 in several career categories. Farid was a three-time all-conference selection, a preseason All-American for the 2007-08 season, and he earned NABC All-Atlantic District and All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association honors in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Farid graduated from Stevens in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Technology.

After graduation, Farid went overseas to play for Alexandria Sporting Club in Egypt. He averaged 10 points in just 15 minutes per game.

Farid is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a personal trainer. He is also certified by Precision Nutrition as a Level 1 Nutrition Coach.

“In the short time that I spent on campus, it was evident that there is an incredibly positive energy amongst the students, faculty and staff,” Farid added. “The overwhelming support for athletics is something I am very excited to be a part of.”

Farid makes his head coaching debut on Tuesday, November 15 at home against Union College.
