Hartwick Featured in 2017 Fiske Guide to Colleges
Hartwick College is featured in the 2017 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. The highly selective guide includes more than 300 colleges and universities selected for their strength in a broad range of subjects such as academics, social life, financial aid, campus setting, housing, extracurricular activities, and more.
Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, the Guide takes into account many qualities when selecting schools, including academic ratings and quality of student life on campus. Hartwick College has appeared in the Guide regularly in recent years.
Fiske notes that Hartwick College is “characterized by its strong liberal arts program,” which “emphasizes study abroad, crystallizing the school’s philosophy that learning isn’t about rote memorization, it’s about creating experiential knowledge and developing skills.”
Fiske also cites Hartwick’s “emphasis on learning through real-world experiences, from working in a Jamaican hospital to interning with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.” They further note that “student/faculty collaborations are the norm.” Other Hartwick staples such as the Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree Program, Honors Program, and Individual Student Program (ISP) are given as examples of the College’s academic highlights.
The College’s facilities are also highlighted – including the tissue culture lab, greenhouse, LEED-certified Golisano Hall and state-of-the-art Campbell Fitness Center – as are the various “comfortable” housing options in Oneonta and at Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus.
“Our focus on experiential learning, in both well-known and less-traveled locations at home and abroad, provides Hartwick students with a balanced perspective of the world into which they will graduate,” said Director of Global Education & Service Learning Dr. Godlove Fonjweng. “I am pleased that this approach to education, with the support of our dedicated faculty, has again put Hartwick College in the company of America’s top tier institutions in the upcoming publication of the prestigious Fiske Guide.”
