Hartwick, Oneonta World of Learning Host “Democracy and Kids”
Hartwick College and Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) will host an event aimed at educating children about the U.S. government, political parties, voting, and the upcoming elections. “Democracy and Kids” will be held Sunday, November 6, from 1 – 2:30 p.m., in the 3rd Floor Foyer of Golisano Hall on the Hartwick College campus. The event is free and open to the Public. Donations are welcomed.
Students from Hartwick College Professor of Political Science Laurel Elder’s “Parties and Elections” class are required to perform eight hours of “democracy work,” getting involved in the upcoming elections in some way. Many students are working for area political candidates, others are taking a more non-partisan approach, such as driving area voters to polling centers.
An idea to create educational games for youth morphed into an event where students would facilitate the games and other activities for area children. The student-created games will be donated to OWL after the event.
During “Democracy and Kids,” attendees will be able to enjoy the following:
- “White House Candy Land”
- “Create Your Own Political Party”
- A Life-Size Voting Booth
- “Political Twister”
- “Voting with Victor”
- “Political Knowledge” Game
- “What Is So Great About “Living in a Democracy?” Balloon Drawing Project
- Sweet treats, including donkey and elephant cookies
Students from Professor Elder’s class, along with OWL volunteers, will be on hand to guide kids through the games and help teach about these important principles.
