During the College’s Opening Convocation on Thursday, August 22, President James H. Mullen, Jr. spoke to the students about the boundless opportunities that await them.

Hartwick College Interim President James H. Mullen, Jr.

“As students, each of you will also have opportunities that today you can’t yet even imagine. To achieve personal growth. To find fulfillment in the classroom, on the playing field and the stage, in the studio and the laboratory. To find peace amid the beauty of our trails and at Pine Lake. And to develop friendships that are lasting and true.”

Vice President for Enrollment Management and Athletics Bryan Gross also took the podium during convocation to share valuable insights about the incoming class.

“You have also accomplished both interesting and noteworthy feats prior to coming to Hartwick,” said Gross. “Among you, we have someone who is both a premier violinist and a tattoo artist, a working freelance photographer, an American citizen who has lived in Hong Kong, and a songwriter who finds inspiration for music while rollerblading and building legos. This is just a small sampling of your many unique and fun accomplishments.”

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Laurel Bongiorno offered advice to the newest members of Oyaron Hill. “Hartwick has so many opportunities for you,” she said. “Go on a career exploration trip to Washington, D.C., Boston or California. Register for a January Term travel course and see the world. Join a club. Get an internship. Get a job on campus. Go to a concert.”

She encouraged students to embrace their time at Hartwick, enjoy the beautiful views, explore Pine Lake and Table Rock, and make new friends. Most importantly, she emphasized her number #1 tip for success: “Go to Class!”
