Title IX and Anti-Discrimination Policy Changes to Be Discussed in Upcoming Community Conversation

Faculty and staff will gain valuable insights into the new federal Title IX regulations and the College’s new Discrimination and Harassment Policy at a virtual event scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19.

“These new regulations provide significant updates for Title IX and for the first time, some colleges have had the opportunity to tailor policies specifically to their needs,” said Geoffrey Gabriel, Hartwick College Title IX Coordinator/College Compliance Officer. “This is a pivotal moment for Hartwick, as we’ve been able to customize policies that fit the College in 2024 and beyond. It’s a substantial step forward.”

Gabriel, who joined Hartwick in March 2024, has nearly 20 years of experience dealing with issues related to discrimination and harassment at various institutions across the East Coast. He emphasized the importance of the event in raising awareness about the new regulations.

“Our goal is to ensure everyone knows about these changes and the College’s compliance with the latest federal regulations,” Gabriel said. “We’ve streamlined and improved our procedures to better support the community and this event is a key part of ensuring that staff and faculty are informed."

The updated Discrimination and Harassment Policy aligns with current federal regulations and aims to unify the College’s approach to handling all forms of discrimination and harassment. According to Vice President for Human Resources and Compliance Suzanne Janitz, Gabriel’s contributions have been integral to the successful development and implementation of these changes.

“Since Geoffrey joined us in March, he has made a meaningful impact on the Hartwick community,” said Janitz. “His initiative and expertise with implementing the final Title IX regulations and the new Discrimination and Harassment Policy has been invaluable. His ability to interpret and apply the critical changes to fit Hartwick’s unique needs has already made a significant difference.”

Janitz and Gabriel will discuss key features of the new policy during the community conversation, but they encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the Discrimination and Harassment Policy in advance. Zoom information for the Sept. 19 event can be found in the calendar invite sent to faculty and staff earlier this semester.
