In Memoriam
To celebrate Nick’s generous spirit, the family has asked for donations to support the Hartwick College students of today and tomorrow.
For more than 60 years, Nick was the heart of Hartwick athletics. As a student-athlete, alumnus and longtime coach, he gave his energy, wisdom and love to this College. He guided our men’s basketball program to national recognition over 21 seasons, compiling a record of 353–191 and earning NCAA Coach of the Year honors in both 1979 and 1988. He also coached baseball and golf, and stood as a model of loyalty and pride in Hartwick.
Nick was also an accomplished athlete. A four-year starter in both basketball and baseball, he earned a tryout with the Los Angeles Dodgers, later won three consecutive City Tennis Championships and captured an Oneonta Country Club golf championship. His impact extended to the broader community as well, serving as the general manager of the Oneonta Yankees baseball club.
Yet Nick’s true legacy is not only measured in wins and championships, but in the countless lives he touched. Generations of Hartwick students were inspired by his mentorship, uplifted by his encouragement and shaped by his steadfast belief in their potential.
Nick was the first inductee into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame, a member of the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame and a recipient of the President’s Medal for Extraordinary and Exemplary Loyalty to the College. In 2009, Hartwick dedicated Lambros Arena in the Binder Physical Education Center to him, a fitting tribute to the place where he shaped so many lives. In 2021, we proudly renamed an annual tradition The Classic Nick Lambros Golf Tournament in his honor, ensuring his name and spirit remain woven into the fabric of Hartwick.
