Why study biology at Hartwick?

Because You'll Study Biology in Upstate New York
Hartwick College is a small, private, liberal arts college located in Oneonta, a small, historical college town nestled in the Susquehanna River valley in the western foothills of the Catskill Mountains. It is surrounded by beautiful 100 year-old forests full of wildlife, and yet is within driving distances of some of the largest and most exciting metropolitan areas in the world, such as New York City, Boston, Montreal, and Washington, D.C. The Adirondacks, the nation's largest state park, is also just a drive away, and several ski resorts are located nearby. Cooperstown, the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, is just 20 minutes away. Hartwick College is located on a forested hill overlooking the town and has beautiful views of the river valley. It is a wonderful place to work, play, and study biology!

We Offer A Challenging Program
Hartwick College has a very strong program in biology. It offers a broad foundation in all the sub-disciplines of biology (from molecular biology through ecosystems and evolution) and lots of opportunities to examine biological ideas in depth - as part of research projects, internships, off-campus programs, and even study abroad. It is a challenging program for students who are serious about actively pursuing a solid education in science and developing the skills they need to be professionals and leaders in their field. Students who choose our program don't do it alone, however. They have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and receive the kind of personal attention that maximizes their opportunities to face new challenges and succeed.

We Provide the Tools and Resources for Students to Succeed
Biology students at Hartwick College benefit from first-class facilities for learning, including teaching and research space and equipment in the Johnstone Science Center as well as Hartwick College's Pine Lake Environmental Campus and field laboratory. Our dedicated faculty use innovative teaching approaches and have active research programs involving students. These resources give Hartwick students a distinct advantage in graduate school, professional school, or industry.

We Have Proof of Success!
The proof of the success of our program is the success of our graduates. Our recent graduates have gotten into some of the most prestigious professional programs and graduate schools in the nation, including:

  • Harvard Medical School (M.D.)
  • Johns Hopkins University (Ph.D. in Immunology)
  • State University of New York at Stony Brook (Dentistry)
  • Cornell University (Ph.D. in Developmental Genetics)
  • Cornell University (Veterinary Medicine)
  • University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology)
  • Yale University (Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology)

Allof the students mentioned above who are now working for their Ph.D.s are actually being paid to go to graduate school, and most of them have all of their graduate tuition paid for as well! These students had no idea, before they came to Hartwick College, that they were going to be so successful.
