Brent R. Nicklas School of Nursing Hosts Bassett Professionals in State-of-the-Art Simulation Facilities

The Brent R. Nicklas School of Nursing at Hartwick College recently hosted its annual collaborative simulation event with Bassett Healthcare Network, giving 29 resident physicians a day of immersive, hands-on learning in the College’s state-of-the-art simulation facilities.

The annual event reflects the longstanding partnership between Hartwick and Bassett and their shared commitment to preparing healthcare professionals for the realities of clinical practice. Resident physicians from medical schools across the United States and around the world participated in the training, which focused on strengthening clinical judgment, communication, teamwork and patient-centered care.

Participants rotated through three high-fidelity simulation scenarios involving emergent medical conditions, patient assessment and communication with patients and family members. Using advanced simulation technology, the resident physicians engaged in realistic patient care experiences that mirrored real-world healthcare settings. Structured debriefing sessions after each scenario encouraged reflection, clinical reasoning and collaborative problem-solving.

Greta Holt, interim director of the simulation lab and clinical and laboratory specialist for the Brent R. Nicklas School of Nursing, said the event has grown significantly since its early years.

“What began as an orientation-style learning experience has evolved into a sophisticated simulation program that utilizes advanced technology, realistic patient scenarios and structured debriefing,” Holt said.

Holt said the continued partnership demonstrates the strength of Hartwick’s simulation-based education program. “Bassett’s decision to conduct this training at Hartwick reflects confidence in our simulation facilities, technology, faculty expertise and ability to create meaningful learning experiences that prepare healthcare professionals for real-world practice.”

Dr. Russell Moore, internal medicine program director at Bassett Healthcare Network and one of the physician leaders facilitating the event, praised Hartwick’s facilities and the value they bring to the training experience.

“From a Bassett perspective, this is a really wonderful facility that you have here at Hartwick. We don’t have anything this robust, and so it allows us access to a simulation center where we can accommodate all of the interns.”

Holt organized the event with support from Bassett Healthcare Network clinical simulation educators Tareq Issa and Emilyann Feldman ’21, along with John Janitz Jr., Hartwick College’s director of nursing technology and the Technology Resource Center.
