As a residential liberal arts college, Hartwick operates on a “24/7” schedule during academic terms when students are in residence on campus. The College’s general policy is that we do not close during these times, despite weather.
On extremely rare occasions, the College may close due to emergency situations such as hazardous weather conditions or states of emergency that might hamper the normal business of the College. However, because of the residential nature of our campus, staff in Campus Safety, Facilities, Food Service, Residential Life, and certain academic and other support areas report to work or continue to work their regular schedule unless they are specifically instructed otherwise. Compensation for those hours worked will be at straight time. Overtime or other premium pay will be paid only when due as a result of normal overtime guidelines. Employees who have any questions regarding their need to report to work as scheduled when the College is closed, should contact their supervisor.
If the College is open but employees are concerned about safe travel to work, late arrival, or feel the need to leave work early due to inclement weather, accrued personal or vacation time should be used to cover hours not worked. Supervisors are responsible for making determinations about the need for offices to be staffed during inclement weather. Individuals with any questions or concerns should discuss with their supervisor.
Unless the College is officially closed, the decision to cancel classes because of instances of inclement weather resides with individual faculty who notify the Office of Academic Affairs, which subsequently posts class cancellations on the website. In extreme weather conditions the College also may choose to close and cancel all classes. Notification of this action also will be posted on the website and distributed accordingly by email, Snow Line (607-431-SNOW), and through local media outlets.
Even if the College is not officially closed, the College may decide to cancel events and activities and/or close some offices or departments. The determination to cancel an event or activity is made by the staff or faculty member responsible for the event, and in such case, the College switchboard should be notified.
The decision to close the College is made by the President, or, in the absence of the President, the President’s designee. Individuals released from work or told not to report as scheduled will be paid based on their normal work schedule. Staff members should record such time on their time sheets with a notation that the College was closed.
Supervisors are required to review internal procedures for handling weather-related emergencies, including evening and weekend activities, with faculty and staff.
If the College is closed prior to the start of a regular workday, a recorded message will be available by calling 607-431-SNOW and the following media outlets will be notified as soon as a decision is made:

If the College is closed during the course of a regular workday, Cabinet members will be notified and an email message distributed. In addition, a message will be recorded and available at the above number.
