Florida Tour Spotlights Visions and Transitions

This winter’s tour of the Sunshine State presented a unique opportunity for Hartwick.

Not only did President James Mullen join members of Hartwick’s Institutional Advancement team to meet with alumni, parents and friends, but President-elect Laurel Bongiorno, who currently serves as vice president of academic affairs and provost, was alongside him to share her vision for the College’s future.

The tour featured three stops, with gatherings in Sarasota, Naples and Tequesta hosted by proud Hartwick alumni and/or longstanding supporters. Each event drew between 15 and 25 attendees and was hosted by former Trustee Kathi (Fragola) Hochberg ’73 and Gordon Hochberg (Sarasota, Jan. 29); former Trustee Dick ’62, PM ’20 and Carol Clapp (Naples, Jan. 30); and Trustee Emeritus Brian H’02, PM ’11 and Josie Wright (Tequesta, Feb. 1).

“We are delighted to host the group every year,” Clapp said. “It was especially pleasant this year with the outgoing and incoming presidents. We enjoyed wonderful conversations between members of different classes, and we look forward to next year.”

Mullen and Bongiorno shared an overview of their planned transition and how they’ve worked collaboratively to strengthen the institution and move it forward. This includes building on Hartwick’s unique life-balance positioning strategy and commitment to tuition transparency while staying true to Hartwick’s liberal arts tradition.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my time leading Hartwick and meeting its many wonderful, passionate supporters,” said Mullen. “We’ve made great strides in numerous areas, be it revenue diversity, program growth or the heightened philanthropy shown by so many generous alumni and friends. The College is well-positioned for future success, and this is an ideal time for me to pass the reins to my very accomplished and deserving colleague.”

The pair also discussed many of the College’s new initiatives, including new majors in sport management, cybersecurity, game development and healthcare administration.

“It’s been so rewarding to see the commitment and excitement our faculty and staff have demonstrated as we explored new, high-demand programs which align well with Hartwick’s values, history and resources,” Bongiorno added. “We’ve expanded our academic and athletic offerings while investing in areas of strength and pride. It’s all contributing to our overall appeal with prospective students and families.”

Those in attendance echoed those thoughts and shared their confidence in Hartwick’s long-term prospects.

“After listening to their inspiring presentations, I’m more confident than ever that the future of Hartwick is in good hands with the current administration, faculty and staff who work tirelessly to help ensure Hartwick’s future,” said Hochberg, who has established an endowed scholarship in her father’s name.

“It’s a privilege to contribute to the College’s success. I plan to continue making a difference and helping students, just as I was helped during my four years.”

Former Hartwick College Trustee

“In his few short years at the helm, Jim Mullen has never acted like an interim President,” added Wright, whose family is memorialized through their support of Wright Stadium. “With great energy and enthusiasm, he and the Board have brought new life to Hartwick.”

The Wrights’ support has continued recently through their lead matching gift, transitioning the stadium to new state-of-the-art lighting to support the College’s commitment to recruiting exceptional student-athletes and sustaining the Wright family’s commitment to excellence. This investment will address the longstanding concern of light “spillage” for community residents and allow the College to once again host night games in a variety of sports. It will also expand opportunities for Hartwick to share the facility more broadly with the community for various events.

“With the academic side of the college in a solid, uplifting position, Dr. Bongiorno will continue Jim’s excitement and commitment,” Wright added. “She is sure to soar Hartwick to even greater success in the ever-changing world of higher education!”

College officials also shared details of this fall’s extraordinary True Blue Weekend, which will be marked by a celebration of the Together, We Soar campaign’s completion as well as President Bongiorno’s inauguration.

“Our Florida hosts are always so generous,” Director of Planned Giving Patricia Dopazo concluded. “They give so graciously of their time, space and other resources. It speaks to Hartwick’s dedication to community and the importance they all feel for keeping one another connected and engaged.”
