Hartwick College Launches Physical Education Teacher Education Major

Hartwick College has announced the addition of a new physical education teacher education major, beginning in the fall 2025 semester. The program is designed to prepare future educators and coaches to inspire healthy habits, active lifestyles and a lifelong love of movement and sport.

Students will gain practical experience working with children, coaches and athletes from kindergarten through high school, while also earning valuable credentials, including the New York State coaching license and American Council on Exercise (ACE) personal training certification. Coursework focuses on exercise and movement science, inclusive teaching strategies and ways to support the whole student through physical, emotional and mindfulness-based learning.

“Physical education is about so much more than sports. It’s about helping students build confidence, community, and long-term well-being,” said Ross Bussell, assistant professor and chair of the Education Department.

Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers teaching physical education, earning their K-12 physical education teaching license, New York State teaching certification, and personal training in fitness facilities.
