Hartwick College Launching New Healthcare Administration Major

Starting this fall, Hartwick College is introducing a unique healthcare administration major designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the dynamic field of healthcare management.

“The need for healthcare administrators is strong nationally and in our region,” said Laurel Elder, professor of political science and department chair. “By launching the healthcare administration major, we will prepare students for these jobs while also strengthening the hospitals and health-related employers in our region.”

The multidisciplinary healthcare administration major will offer courses in health policy and economics, health data and analytics, healthcare finance, public administration and leadership, and ethics. These courses will be taught by Hartwick’s faculty from the political science, philosophy, economics, accounting, public health, English, anthropology, history, computer science, sociology and business departments. The program will also include online courses.

The curriculum is designed to provide students with the diverse set of skills and knowledge required to enter the healthcare administrative workforce and excel in leadership and complex problem-solving, which are essential in the intricate world of healthcare management.

In addition to their classroom-based courses, students will complete an internship with regional healthcare organizations, gaining practical experience and industry insights.
