Inaugural Academic Affairs Art Prize Goes To “Mom’s Garden”

When Melanie Mohn ‘24 took a picture of her mother’s garden, she had no idea it would soon be part of a piece of artwork hanging in Hartwick’s Office of Academic Affairs.

Her composition, “Mom’s Garden,” a silkscreen print made in Professor Katherine Kreisher’s Intermediate Printmaking class, was the inaugural winner of the Academic Affairs Purchase Prize. The award, which comes with a $500 prize, will see Mohn’s piece hung in the Office of Academic Affairs for a year before joining the permanent alumni collection.

The photo from her mother’s garden at her family home in Endicott, NY, was the basis for the print.

“It was my first time learning how to silkscreen print! I exposed and developed my screen using a photo emulsion method, and I was interested to see how different my image would turn out from the original.”

She mixed up a bright blue color, in part, as her favorite color, and to see how it might compliment the orange flowers of the original photo. “I work in photorealism when I’m painting, but printmaking allows me to find a balance between the experimental and the photorealistic.”

And the effect was enough to impress Laurel Bongiorno, vice president for academic affairs & dean of faculty, who was tasked with selecting the prize-winning piece from the Junior Review Show on Thursday, April 13. “It was a unique challenge to select a piece of art,” said Bongiorno. “But this piece really stood out from the others, and I was drawn to it because of its beauty, technique and, particularly, its color.” The winning work will be showcased in the Academic Affairs suite in Bresee Hall for a year.

The President’s Purchase Prize winner will be announced at the closing reception of the Senior Thesis Show on May 19. President Darren Reisberg will select his favorite piece, which will be displayed for a year in the President’s office in Yager. The artist will also receive a $500 prize.

Both pieces will then be added to the extensive Alumni Collection, which features hundreds of paintings, prints, sculptures and other works of art from Hartwick alumni.

This summer, an exhibition of works from the Alumni Collection will be held in the Foreman Gallery.
