Nursing Program Admissions Qualifications

In addition to the admissions requirements set by Hartwick College, the following qualifications are required for each of our nursing programs:

High School Graduates:
Applicants to the nursing program should have a strong background in the sciences, preferably with four years of high school math and science and with a high school average of 88 or higher. SAT/ACT test scores are optional, but highly recommended for those applying to the nursing program.

Transfer Students:
The Four-Year Degree program requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher from previous institutions.

The Three-Year Degree program requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher from previous institutions.

Successful applicants to the Accelerated Summer Program have a GPA of 3.0 or higher from previous institutions. Applicants must complete the admissions process and submit an official high school transcript and official transcripts from each college attended.

Students must have completed the following pre-requisite courses with a B- or higher prior to the start of the program in mid-May:

  • Anatomy & Physiology I & II (8 credits)
  • Chemistry course with a lab (4 credits)
  • Microbiology with a lab (4 credits)
  • Developmental Psychology: Birth to Death (3 credits)

Applicants to this challenging program must have a strong background in the sciences and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 from previous institutions.

Nursing Pre-Requisties:
Anatomy & Physiology I & II with lab (8 credits)
Chemistry course with a lab (4 credits)
Microbiology with a lab (4 credits)
Developmental Psychology: Birth to Death (3 credits)
Statistics (3 credits)
Ethics course, preferably healthcare related (3 credits)

Additional General Education Requirement:
6 additional credits in the social sciences, which must reflect two different departments
6 credits in the humanities

3-6 credits of electives

Writing Competency:
Achievement of Writing Level 4 is required (based on a writing evaluation completed at Hartwick).

Nurses with an Associate degree in nursing who possess a license as a Registered Nurse (RN) may be accepted with advanced standing as candidates for a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing. Students in this program complete 7 nursing courses. In addition, they must complete required nursing co-requisites as well as the liberal arts courses necessary to meet the requirements of the College. The total number of courses needed depends on each individual’s educational background and the courses transferred.
