Hartwick’s 30–credit master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) in childhood education provides a pathway into teaching for students with an undergraduate degree in another field. The program combines graduate study in curriculum, learning theory, literacy and inclusive teaching with a 100-hour multicultural practicum and 14 weeks of supervised student teaching in grades 1-6.
Designed to be complete in one academic year, the program leads to New York state initial certification in childhood education, grades 1-6.

Get a head start on your graduate degree. Hartwick’s 3+1 and 4+1 pathways allow eligible undergraduate students to begin graduate coursework as part of their academic plan, creating a more direct path from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree.

Cost
$24,000 ($800 per credit x 30 credits)
Admission requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an institutionally accredited college or university (official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions must be submitted).
- 3.0 minimum GPA.
- Resume or CV that demonstrates relevant experience, leadership, or work with youth.
- Personal statement that addresses professional and academic goals, and motivation for entering the teaching profession (250-500 words).
- Two letters of recommendation (one academic and one professional or supervisory).
- Interview with program faculty.
