Hartwick College student receiving honors at Honors Convocation waves to crowd

Faculty Scholars

The distinction, known as Faculty Scholars, recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding contributions in the classroom, engagement in scholarly pursuits and a commitment to the Hartwick community.

The Honor

Rising seniors are nominated by faculty in their major departments based on academic achievement, leadership and character. Each department and the Committee on Individual Student Programs (ISP Committee) with eligible candidates may name departmental Faculty Scholars.

The Recognition

Named Faculty Scholars receive a letter informing them of their departmental Faculty Scholar recognition at Honors Convocation. They each receive a book (a classic in their field, via department request) and are invited to submit information for the committee's review to be considered for a John Christopher Hartwick Scholarship.

Naming Departmental Faculty Scholars

Departments and the ISP Committee may name Faculty Scholars based on the number of eligible students in each major within the department.

  • One may be made for each major with eligible candidates.
  • Two may be made for each major with 3-5 eligible candidates.
  • Three may be made for each major with 6 or more eligible candidates.

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered as a Faculty Scholar, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be full-time students with a cumulative GPA of 3.65 or higher.
  • Have completed at least 45 credits at Hartwick College.
  • Demonstrate a combination of academic excellence and active community involvement.
  • Contribute to campus diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging through academic, extracurricular or co-curricular work.
  • Show academic excellence through both the breadth and depth of course selection.
