News Hartwick College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hartwick College is hosting a series of events and activities in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15. During this time of recognition, the College will offer an array of upcoming campus events, documentary film screenings, music and activities that celebrate the impact of Hispanic and Latinx/e culture.

September 15 through to October 15.
An Hispanic / Latinx/e figures scavenger hunt. Look for the portraits of 52 Hispanic/Latinx/e figures hidden around campus. Be the first to identify them all to win a prize. Details will be shared by the Modern Languages Department.

September 19 at 6 p.m. in Anderson 138.
The Modern Languages Department is hosting a screening of the documentary, The Ornament of the World, which retraces the 800-year period in medieval Spain when Muslims, Christians, and Jews forged a common cultural identity that frequently transcended their religious differences.

September 28 at 6 p.m. in Slade Theatre.
Modern Languages is hosting a screening of the documentary, Landfall. Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, Landfall is set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony’s governor in 2019 and offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance.

October 4 at 6 p.m. in Slade Theater.
Modern Languages is hosting a screening of the documentary, No más bebés. The documentary tells the story of Mexican immigrant mothers who sued doctors, the state and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County General Hospital during the 1970s.

The Latinos Unidos Association (LUA) is hosting Culture Day. The College community is encouraged to wear something that represents their culture.

October 10, all day.
LUA invites the College community to wear their favorite soccer jersey.

October 10 at 6 p.m. in Anderson 138.
The Modern Languages is hosting a screening of La casa de Bernarda Alba. This recording of a live event explores a tragedy that unfolds in a cloistered world of women in 1930s Spain.

October 11, all day.
LUA invites the College community to dress like their favorite childhood cartoon character.

October 12, all day.
LUA celebrates Vaquero Day and encourages the College community to dress like a vaquero/a (Western).

October 13, all day.
As part of Celebrity day, LUA invites the College community to wear something that relates to their favorite Hispanic celebrity.

October 19 at 6 p.m. in Slade Theater.
Modern Languages is hosting a screening of Los hermanos / The Brothers film, which focuses on virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers—violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo—and tracks their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together.

October 21, virtual.
The LatinX Leads-Student Leadership Conference will provide students with the opportunity to learn about leadership, advocacy, and community organizing.

October 31, all day.
Dia de Los Muertos Ofrenda is hosted by the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DIB) and student club, Latinos Unidos, will celebrate and honor the souls of loved ones who have passed. The campus community is invited to bring in or email a photo of a loved one they would like to honor. The photo will be added to a Dia de Los Muertos display in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Center, located on the fourth floor of Yager Hall. This event will celebrate the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican holiday that honors the memory of loved ones who have passed away.

November 7 at 6 p.m. in Slade Theater.
Modern Languages is hosting a screening of the documentary El silencio de los otros / The Silence of Others, which reveals the epic struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco, as they organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight a “pact of forgetting” around the crimes they suffered.
