Hartwick Students Pick-up Fall Clean-up Tradition

Only a week into the 2023 fall semester and Hartwick students are already giving back to the community. In early September, roughly 20 students embarked upon a clean-up project, walking from the Anderson Center for the Arts parking lot down to Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center on Market Street in Oneonta, picking up trash and other debris along the way.

“One of the main things I hear from students is how beautiful Oneonta is,” said Hartwick College Coordinator of Civic Engagement Alex Douglas. “This is why it is such a good event for students to help pick up in and around the surroundings they enjoy so much.”

The Office of Civic Engagement coordinated this event for the students who split up and covered three routes that started at Anderson and ended at Foothills. Casella Waste Systems provided the garbage bags, the gloves and arranged with Foothills to allow Hartwick to use their dumpsters.

Men’s basketball player Cooper Francis ’25 explained why he and his teammates participated in this event.

“We just want to give back and do the right thing, as this is our home for the next four years. We love giving back to the community by cleaning the streets and also hosting basketball clinics at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.”

“It’s important that we use our platform to give back to the community,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Nick Ciresi. “We’ve got a bunch of selfless guys here and they are showing that by dedicating some time on a Saturday morning to clean up the streets.”
