Hartwick Students Earn Rize Career Skills Scholarships

Two Hartwick College students have been recognized with Rize Career Skills Scholarships, a program designed to support and celebrate students who successfully apply skills learned in the classroom to meaningful real-world experiences and professional development. Mira Crawford ’26 and Mary Kinnane ’26 were selected among just 25 students across Rize partner institutions to receive the competitive scholarship.

The scholarships specifically recognize students who demonstrate how career-focused, skills-based coursework can translate directly into practical experiences beyond the classroom. Both Crawford and Kinnane highlighted how coursework from Hartwick’s healthcare administration program, offered through Rize Education, prepared them for hands-on internships and leadership opportunities.

Crawford, a public health major with minors in healthcare administration and political science, focused her application on how she applied skills learned in her Rize healthcare administration courses during her internship with Hartwick’s Office of Wellness and Health Promotion. In that role, she helped develop educational materials and outreach initiatives to keep students healthy and safe on campus.

“My personal discipline and motivation toward school improved because of the Rize course. I credit a lot of my achievements to what I learned in those courses since it really challenged me to improve my critical thinking skills.”

“Mira demonstrated exactly the kind of real-world application this scholarship is designed to recognize,” said Professor Laurel Elder, chair of the Department of Political Science, Law and International Relations, and coordinator of the healthcare administration program. “She took concepts and skills developed in her healthcare administration coursework and used them to make a tangible impact on campus health and wellness initiatives.”

Kinnane, a nursing major with a minor in healthcare administration, centered her scholarship application on her summer 2025 internship at a children’s summer camp. During the internship at Poly Summer Camp in Brooklyn, N.Y., she applied concepts from courses such as health data and analytics, and health systems while helping oversee registration and medical documentation for campers and families. Her work ensured that families completed required medical paperwork and safety forms, helping the camp maintain a safe and healthy environment for all children attending.

Mary Kinnane

“My scholarship proposal was focused on my internship over the summer, and how I was able to use the skills I had learned in class in practice. I spoke about how I was able to build upon my leadership abilities and felt super prepared for the last class I needed to finish the minor at Hartwick.”
