Carpenter ’88 Builds Bridge to Nation’s Capital, Real-World Opportunities, for Hartwick Students

When it comes to helping Hartwick students, Robert Carpenter ’88 is always ready.

“I’ve always kept in touch with my alma mater, offering career advice to students; but in the last five years, I’ve wanted to do more,” he said.

As president and CEO of Baltimore Washington Financial Advisors (BWFA), Robert has hosted students on the Hawk Center HOP since 2021. He has sponsored bus travel to Washington, D.C., tours of museums, business simulation challenges, and opportunities to network with alumni and mentors in a variety of fields.

“Being in Oneonta, Hartwick students have a lot of access to Albany, Boston and New York City,” he said. “But D.C. is a great city for young people and there are a lot of opportunities here. I want to make sure it’s on students’ radars.”

His BWFA Institute Internship program offers another opportunity for students to work directly with him. They do in-depth research on subjects like social security, trade, and global economic policies.

“These projects give them exposure to all these financial services, as well as show them how to do the in-depth research they’ll need in this field,” said the Hartwick Board Trustee.

Two Hartwick students, Sam Hanley ’22 and Cierra Barkley ’23, have already benefited from the program.

In addition to the D.C. opportunities, Robert has made a $20,000 campaign pledge to the Real-World Experience Fund, which will support students in their internships.

“I’m in my give-back mode. Hartwick was an incredible opportunity for me, and I want to help wherever I can.”
