Personal Growth:

Translating Gratitude Into a Legacy at Hartwick College

Every Hartwick supporter is inspired to strengthen the College for a different reason, and it often has to do with their own Hartwick experience. One of these is Glenn Munson, an alumnus from the class of 1972.

Munson earned a bachelor of arts in English from Hartwick College in 1972 and a master of education in student personnel services from Kent State University.

A member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and the College choir, Munson credits his experience as a student worker in Hartwick’s Admissions Office for launching him in his career. He says the liberal arts “taught him how to learn.” He remembers the valuable (but difficult) lesson he learned from English professor, David Baldwin when he questioned the F he received on an essay on Walden by David Thoreau. Munson felt his essay deserved an A and Professor Baldwin explained that while his writing merited an A, his submission received an F because his response did not address the question asked in the prompt.

He starts any project by asking himself, “What is the problem we are trying to solve?”

As senior consulting director for focusEDU, Munson assists institutions with registrar optimization services in assessments/evaluations, national searches, interim appointments, coaching and mentoring.

He has served as a vice president of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (AACRAO) and was appointed an honorary lifetime member.

“It took me a while to understand what Hartwick meant to me. Working in highered for over 50 years shaped my views of liberal arts and a small college experience contributed to my personal growth. Looking back, I realized that I discovered my future during my senior year, thanks to a few mentors on campus. For that, I am forever grateful.”
