Seasons Greetings Through the Years
Receiving winter holiday greetings from the College president has been a Hartwick tradition for generations, with examples in the College Archives dating back to 1957. These cards offer a vivid glimpse into the spirit of each era, from early designs to more modern styles and reflect both the artistic preferences of Hartwick leaders and the changing character of the season. Beginning in the 1990s, messages centered on joy, peace and goodwill began appearing more often, reflecting a shift in the tone of holiday greetings.
Artwork has always played an important role in Hartwick holiday cards. Many feature original pieces created by members of the Hartwick community or by local artists. Campus landmarks and familiar buildings often appear in winter scenes that capture the beauty of the hill and celebrate the sense of place that defines Hartwick College.
In recent years, as the College has moved toward more digital communications, presidential greetings have evolved as well, carrying the same warmth and artistry into new formats that reach a wider audience while remaining rooted in tradition.
Taken together, these cards form a charming visual history and offer an annual snapshot of Hartwick creativity, character and tradition.
