Martin Luther King Jr. Day & Black History Month Celebrations

Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta Event

Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta are partnering on a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event to include:

  • A keynote speaker, Alexander Horton will talk about Dr. King’s life and viewpoints, as well as his speech.
  • Two students (an 11-year-old and a SUNY student) will read their winning MLK essays.
  • A student will sing Dr. King’s favorite song.
  • A panel discussion consisting of both Hartwick and SUNY Oneonta students and faculty.
  • A reception will follow this event.

Day of Service

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service is the only federal holiday that is also designated by Congress as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.”

The Office of Civic Engagement offers four stations where members of the Hartwick community can participate in volunteer activities for the service component the day represents.

"I Have a Dream"

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging will play the “I Have a Dream”; speech on a loop for people to be able to sit and listen reflectively.

Selma

All students and employees are invited to view the showing of the 2014 historical drama film Selma (2 h 8m).

Faculty are encouraged to discuss the film with their students.

Slade Theatre, Yager Hall at 12:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.

The general public is invited to view the film at the 7:00 p.m. showtime.
