The Baker-Simpson Silicon Valley experience gave Chelsea Kotey ’25, a biochemistry major, a chance to reconnect with her passion for computer science.
“I took a computer science class, but I was too scared to explore that interest.” But the Baker-Simpson experience motivated me to go back to it. Now, I’m adding computer science as a minor!”

The annual immersive spring break experience, made possible through the continued generosity of Simon Baker ’93, brought 10 motivated students to explore social entrepreneurship, innovation and social impact through meetings, networking and tours at some of the leading industries in Silicon Valley. Of those 10 students, five are Baker-Simpson fellows who go on to complete an internship at a company focused on social change.
“For me, the Baker-Simpson program gives students a chance to explore passions aligned with but not exactly on the path they’re on.” It shows students a broader set of applications of their interests and how they can build their careers around those interests.”

They visited alumni Brad Black ’85, CEO/Founder of EO Products, Harry Morton ’18 and Diego Espinola ’22 at Windfall, and trustee Colleen Connery ’83. The students also toured several companies, including the All May See Foundation, Career Academy, Coursera and Stellic.
But it was meeting with Cara Moyer in Global Culture & Values at Airbnb, that really struck a chord with Kotey.
“I always thought it was just for people to rent out their homes, but there is way more to it,” Kotey said. “They work with their hosts, visitors and community with a mindset of being of service to others. And that really stood out to me.”
As a Baker-Simpson fellow, Kotey is now looking for an internship that will help her combine her passion for healthcare with her rediscovered love of technology.
