Awards Aim To Support Environmental Study Students

Whether students want to study the environment of Pine Lake, intern in a sustainability-focused career or conduct their research internationally, Peter Fauth, professor and chair of the biology department, wants them to know that Hartwick is ready to offer them support.

“For so many students, these great research opportunities and internships are cost-prohibitive,” he said. “But with our Environmental Scholarship Awards, students can use that money to get those great experiences they need as part of their coursework.”

Recent projects have included:

  • Jessica Betts ’25: Foraging Ecology of the Octopus (Octopus insularis) at San Salvador, The Bahamas; Mark Kuhlmann, Advisor
  • Augustine Amponsah ’25: Environmental Protection Internship in Uganda; Michelle Budwitz, Advisor
  • Kaitlyn Brybag ’25: Effect of Chelae Loss on Rusty Crayfish Predation; Mark Kuhlmann, Advisor
  • Silas Moyer ’26: Investigating the Fluvial Geomorphology Changes at Pine Lake Environmental Campus; Zsuzsanna Balogh-Brunstad, Advisor
  • Kiara Dolan ’25: Feeding Behavior of Wolf Spiders in the Laboratory; Alex Sweger, Advisor

The scholarships were endowed in 2010 with funds from the Margaret Cargill Foundation to support student engagement in local, regional and international environments. “This means that students don’t have to choose between doing research and having a job,” said Fauth. “This kind of support – which includes a stipend for housing – means they can do both.”

The 2025-26 scholarships are open to any full-time Hartwick student in good academic standing. Students can apply for funding in one of three categories:

The Environment Research Scholar Award supports students planning on conducting student-faculty collaborative research at Pine Lake or in nearby state parks (e.g., Robert V. Riddell State Park).

The Environment Internship Scholar Award supports students participating in an approved internship with an organization involved in sustainability, environmental science, policy, education or a related field.

The International Environment Scholar Award supports students embarking on a sustainability and environment-related project while studying abroad.

Students must fill out an application, which includes a project proposal. The deadline for application is Tuesday, April 22.
