What I Do Now: I am currently an assistant district attorney in Boston. I have prosecuted various crimes ranging from juvenile cases to firearm cases and for the last two years, have focused primarily on crimes of domestic violence and sexual assault. This work has allowed me to commit to public service and help give a voice to survivors of these serious crimes.
How the Hartwick Experience Impacted My Professional Life: I am very appreciative of how Hartwick College gave me the tools and resources to launch my career not just as an attorney but as a prosecutor. Hartwick not only provided insightful classes but also helped with a wonderful internship program that allowed me to be involved with the Broome County District Attorney’s office. It was from that experience that I knew I wanted to be an assistant district attorney. I was able to participate in the prelaw/moot court program Hartwick offered which shaped my resume to get into Suffolk Law School and later become an assistant district attorney in Boston. Without those resources, I am not sure I would still be able to be a prosecutor today, serving the community.
Challenges in the Field: There are plenty of challenges when trying to prosecute someone in any case. In this line of work, the prosecuting attorney must work closely with several other professionals, including, but not limited to, witnesses, detectives and defense counsel. We all need to work together when preparing a case for trial, which means there is a lot of interpersonal communication that must be done. Other challenges include finding the time to present cases, as many cases are backlogged for several years due to there being limited time available in the courthouse. Finally, having to present testimony and evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt is a very difficult task facing any prosecutor.
My Favorite Aspect of My Career: The public service aspect of my job is by far my favorite part. Being in my position has allowed me to do my part in serving community members who have been victims of crime and help bring them justice. Although the work can be tiresome, it allows victims’ voices to be heard, which is incredibly rewarding.
My Advice for Current Students: You do not need to know what you want to do in your career at this very moment, but understand that your career has already started. The people you meet today, the connections you make, and how you do academically will all affect your next move. Understand that you are building your career today, even if you aren’t sure what that career will be yet.
