Fall 2025 Faculty Lecture Series: Exploring Inclusion and Creativity

Hartwick College’s Faculty Lecture Series returns this fall, featuring thought-provoking talks that highlight research, creativity and innovation from across campus.

The series begins Friday, September 12, with the Inclusive Excellence 3 Team and their presentation “Growing the Inclusivity of STEM Through Faculty Development, Inclusive Curricula, and Student Empowerment.” Supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the team has been working to improve introductory science experiences for PEER (Persons Excluded by Ethnicity and/or Race) students. In this presentation, the team will discuss what they have learned so far, midway through the funding period, from projects in faculty development, student empowerment and inclusive curricula.

Team members include Mary E. Allen, professor of biology; Stephanie Carr ’06, associate professor of biology; Amy Forster Rothbart, associate professor of political science; Mark Kuhlmann, professor of biology; Samantha Lara, associate director of the Center for Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging; Andrew J. Piefer, professor and chair of chemistry; and Kevin Schultz, associate professor of physics.

On Friday, November 14, Associate Professor of Music Education and Department Co-chair Meghan Sheehy will present “A Book, an Article, and a Horn Choir.” Sheehy will reflect on her sabbatical, which included publishing the book “Tonacity: The Tona Brown Story,” cowriting the article “Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) in Action” with Associate Professor of Music and Department Co-Chair Andy Pease, and recentering her musicianship by joining a horn choir in the Pacific Northwest. Sheehy will share how these experiences shaped her perspective on research, teaching and balance.

The September 12 lecture will take place in Golisano Hall 203 and the November 14 lecture will be held in Eaton Lounge, Bresee Hall. Both events run from 12:20 to 1:15 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
