First-Year Student Finds Her Place On Stage

Even with a first-year schedule packed with classes, ensembles and recitals, Emma Kargoe ’28 made time to star in the Cardboard Alley Players production of Sophocles’ classic tragedy, Antigone.

“Theater holds such a place in my heart,” she said. “I get to step out of my responsibilities for a moment to focus on making art with people who love it.”

Though her previous experience was in musicals, she saw a poster for auditions and, after researching the show, decided to audition.

“I saw how much power this play has. And I knew I had to make time to be part of that.”

She got the role of King Creon, who orders the death of Antigone after she seeks to bury her traitorous brother, Polynices. “So many of the men in our cast were played by women and non-binary actors,” said Kargoe. “I’ve never played a man, so I had to learn different mannerisms, which helped me grow as a performer.”

In addition to the Cardboard Alley Players, she is a part of the National Association for Music Education Club, Flute Choir, Wind Ensemble and sings as an alto in the College Choir.

The play was updated in look and tone, similar to the HBO show Succession. “Our crowd loved how relevant Antigone’s overall theme and message was,” Kargoe said. “It really shows how power can destroy those family connections. It’s such a great tragedy.”
