Hartwick College’s New Training and Refresher Programs Offer Preparation for Hazardous Waste Site Certification

Hartwick College will offer a 40-hour HAZWOPER training program, January 8 - 12, to provide workers with the knowledge and skills they need to enter and work safely on a wide range of contaminated sites.

The program will be taught by Osamede Evbuomwan, an OSHA-authorized trainer with over 20 years of experience in occupational health and safety. Evbuomwan is also the occupational health and safety manager at Hartwick College and an adjunct faculty member who teaches courses in occupational health and safety.

Covering all of the topics required for OSHA HAZWOPER certification, the program will include topics related to hazardous waste operations and emergency response, such as:

  • OSHA regulations
  • Site safety plans
  • Natural, chemical, physical, and safety hazards
  • Hazard risk and assessment procedures
  • Air monitoring
  • Controlling hazards
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Decontamination
  • Spill control
  • Emergency planning and response
  • Site assessment and sampling
  • Site control
  • Safe excavations
  • Confined space safety
  • Control of hazardous energy
  • Handling containers
  • Heavy equipment hazards

Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification exam. The exam is required for workers involved in hazardous waste operations and emergency response.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, January 8, to Friday, January 12. It will be taught in Golisano Hall on the Hartwick campus. The cost of the program is $485, which includes training materials and lunch.

For those looking to complete their mandatory yearly training, Hartwick will also offer a refresher course on Wednesday, January 17. The refresher program will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Golisano Hall. The cost of the program is $105, which includes training materials and lunch.
