Inspired By Mom, First Generation Student Finds His Home on Hartwick Fields

As Jose Moreno '25 readies for his senior art show, he has a particular project in mind.

“I’m painting a series of portraits of people who had a huge influence on me,” he said. “And my mom is one of the strongest.”

Though his mother, Angelica Serna, graduated from college in Mexico, she was the one who encouraged him to be the first of their family to study in the United States.

“She was the one who was over my shoulder every night, asking if I’d reached out to coaches, if I’d looked at schools, if I’d applied,” he said.

An art major with a computer science minor, Moreno came to Hartwick to play soccer as a left-back.

“I’m enjoying everything. It was a good challenge to find the balance between classes, socializing and practice.”

And when an on-field injury resulted in surgery, his mother was there to support him.

“She had never been able to come to campus before,” Moreno said. “She stayed with me for a week and was obsessed with the views here.”

He doesn’t plan on being the only Hartwick alum in his family. “My little sister is 10, but I’m already telling her all about Hartwick,” he said. “I’m honored to be able to model what it means to go to college in the United States.”
