Student Leader Maggie Van Valkenburgh ’26 Helps Welcome 16 Into Nursing Honor Society

The Hartwick College School of Nursing inducted 16 students into the Omicron Rho chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing during a Nov. 19 ceremony in Shineman Chapel. The event also marked another milestone in the leadership journey of Chapter President Maggie Van Valkenburgh ’26 of Highland, N.Y.

Van Valkenburgh, who was elected president in spring 2025, played a central role in planning and coordinating this year’s ceremony. She ensured families, faculty and friends could celebrate the accomplishments of Hartwick’s newest nursing leaders.

“As president, my main role is to demonstrate leadership and management by presiding over meetings, delegating duties and serving as the main point of contact for the chapter,” Van Valkenburgh said. “It was a beautiful event where parents, family members and friends were able to celebrate the nursing students who are so accomplished here at Hartwick.”

Membership in Sigma Theta Tau recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, integrity and strong leadership potential. Nursing students must rank in the top 35% of their class to be considered.

Van Valkenburgh, a double major in nursing and Spanish, has witnessed firsthand what it takes to earn this distinction, not only through her own involvement but through tutoring many of the inductees.

“It is so exciting to see new inductees get inducted into the Omicron Rho chapter. Since early in their first year, I have been tutoring them in various nursing classes. It has been such a great experience for me watching each of them turn into the amazing nurses that they will be not too far from now.”

Founded in 1922 by six nursing students at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, which is now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sigma Theta Tau International is one of the world’s largest nursing honor societies, with more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters spanning institutions and clinical partners around the globe.
