John Christopher Hartwick Scholars
The John Christopher Hartwick (JCH) Scholarship represents the highest academic distinction at Hartwick College, recognizing students for their academic excellence, leadership and character.
History
Established in 1967 by the Hartwick College Board of Trustees on the recommendation of then-President Frederick M. Binder, the JCH Scholarship has been a symbol of outstanding achievement for over five decades.
JCH Scholarship
Every JCH Scholar is awarded a generous tuition grant and earns a distinguished place among those who embody the very best of Hartwick College.
Medallion & Honors
Since 1997, in celebration of the scholarship’s 30th anniversary, each JCH Scholar has been presented with a medallion to wear at commencement and other formal academic events.
The tradition is made possible through the generosity of a legacy family, beginning with Joyce R. Smith ’58 and Rev. Russell D. Smith ’59, and continuing with William Kitson III ’86 and Diane Smith Kitson ’87, a JCH Scholar herself.
In addition, the names of the JCH Scholars are proudly displayed on a commemorative plaque in the foyer of the Stevens-German Library. This permanent recognition honors their exceptional achievements and serves as an inspiration for future generations of scholars.
Nomination & Faculty Scholars Recognition
Rising seniors are nominated by faculty in their major departments based on academic achievement, leadership and character. This distinction, known as Faculty Scholars, recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding contributions in the classroom, engagement in scholarly pursuits and a commitment to the Hartwick community.
