What I Did for a Living: I worked for 35 years in the operating room as a nurse at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, N.Y.
How the Hartwick Experience Impacted My Professional Life: It gave me a valid foundation to begin my nursing career. Hartwick also provided me with the opportunity to go to the O.R. and see a cholecystectomy or gallbladder surgery. This sparked my interest in the human body, and how it works.
Challenges in the Field: Always having to think and move very quickly.
My Favorite Aspect of My Career: Being able to comfort a patient when they were undergoing anesthesia, and letting them know our team will take very good care of them.
My Advice for Current Students: Being a nursing student is difficult. Being a nurse was difficult. Don’t give up! It is a very rewarding career, one in which you can make a difference when someone is scared. Also, as a mother, I was always able to be home with my daughters. I worked weekends and holidays when they were young, so my husband was able to be home with them.
