The Hartwick College Institute of Public Service Announces First Annual Senator James Seward ’73 Summer Public Service Intern

The Hartwick College Institute of Public Service is proud to announce that Adilyam Imyarova ’27, a rising sophomore from Kazakhstan, has been selected as the College’s first annual Senator James Seward ’73 Summer Public Service Intern.

Imyarova, a criminal justice major with minors in forensic science, and gender and sexuality studies, recently completed her first year at Hartwick College. She has already distinguished herself through academic excellence, leadership potential and a strong interest in public service.

Imyarova will work with the institute’s co-directors, Professors Matt Chick, Laurel Elder and Zachary McKenney, on a range of projects, including preparing Hartwick to serve as an official polling place for the fall’s elections and partnering with the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce and SUNY Oneonta to host a debate for Oneonta mayor.

“As an international student who is interested in law, I'm incredibly honored to intern for the Institute of Public Service under the mentorship of three remarkable professors. I look forward to learning more about New York, specifically Oneonta, and aiming to make a positive impact in the community.”

The newly established, paid internship honors the legacy of New York State Senator James L. Seward ’73, who served the 51st District with distinction for over three decades. Created to inspire students to follow in Senator Seward’s footsteps, the internship provides hands-on experience in local government, law and civic engagement.

Professor of Political Science, Department Chair, and Co-Director of the Hartwick College Institute of Public Service, Laurel Elder, emphasized the value of real-world experience for students interested in civic engagement.

“Most young people want to get involved in our democracy but often do not know how or have the confidence to do so,” Elder said.

“This internship provides students with a concrete way to engage with government officials and democracy at the local level while also expanding their professional network.”

The internship reflects Hartwick’s broader mission to prepare students to be active, informed participants in democratic life. It was founded in memory of Senator Seward, who passed away last summer.

The nonpartisan Institute of Public Service was launched in September 2023 to engage young people in democracy, support local governments in strengthening the region, and inspire a new generation of community and national leaders.
