Exploring Life Around the Hill

Life on Oyaron Hill is shaped by a unique mix of on-campus traditions and downtown Oneonta’s lively culture. In this series, Khadifi Madison ’27 explores the full spectrum of Hartwick student life.

Through these stories, readers will experience the energy of campus events, the connections forged in classrooms and beyond, and the ways students engage with the wider community. Together, these reflections provide a vivid portrait of what it means to live and learn at Hartwick College today.

Wick Express Experience

Each year, the Hartwick Campus Activities Board (HCAB) hosts Wick Express, a tradition that brings the community together for fun and engaging events. A wide variety of activities take place in Stack Lounge and above in the Commons dining area, breakfast for dinner is served!

This year, I had the opportunity to go and partake in the tradition. The first thing my friends and I did was go to the Commons to eat. When we walked in, we saw that the whole area was decorated for the occasion, with faculty and staff there to greet us.

Even more faculty and staff were serving food and chatting with students, and the room felt warm and welcoming. We grabbed plates of eggs, pancakes and sausage patties and sat down to reminisce about our years at Hartwick.

Once we had finished eating, we made our way down to Stack Lounge to check out the activities. The first thing I noticed was a big mechanical bull in the middle of the room. I had never seen one in real life and it seemed pretty cool. All around us, students were painting ornaments, taking photos at a holiday booth and playing games. Everywhere we went, people were smiling and talking with one another like one big community and it felt good to be part of something that brought everyone together.

There were stations for arts and crafts, ring engraving and even stuff-a-critter, where you could build your own plush doll. We decided to take some pictures in the photo booth and socialize.

As we walked around, the energy stayed high. Students laughing, trying out activities and enjoying a break from studying and prepping for finals. For a few hours, Wick Express made campus feel both relaxing and alive, giving us a chance to unwind and appreciate the community we have here at Hartwick College. By the end of the night, my friends and I left feeling tired, full and happy.

Table Rock Trail: A Getaway

After a stressful week of classes, a small group of Hartwick friends tried to decide what to do. Three friends wanted to take a hike up to the Table Rock Trail. The other two would rather hang out in their dorms.

After a game of rock, paper, scissors, the friends decided they would take the hike. As first-year students, it was something they had heard about countless times, but on this bright and sunny Saturday morning, they would experience it.

After a short walk up the hills on campus, they arrived at their starting point. Their bags were packed with snacks, water and extra clothes in case it got cold. They read the map and decided which path to take.

The trail started gently, with a nice upward trend to start off the trail. Some in the group walked fast while others stood back to take in the scenery. As they climbed, the trail got steeper and watching where to step became more of a calculation.

They stopped often, not out of fatigue, but for photos, jokes or just to point out the way sunlight was hitting the trees. The friends observed things around, such as moss growing on huge rocks, animals in this peaceful environment and the many small Hartwick markers along the trees on the trail.

“Table Rock Trail is very calm and relaxing, being able to see the other parts of Oneonta you wouldn’t usually see and enjoying the nature as well is amazing.”

After some time, the friends talked and complained about their calves burning. With each step, they got closer to their destination. Then they reached the top of the trail. Above the town of Oneonta, the friends all felt like royalty. From the edge, they could see the whole west side of town spread out below.

Quietness was in the air as the friends sat down on the bench and took in the beautiful view. They pulled out the snacks and drinks and, for about an hour, hung out, had great conversations and just kicked back.

Laughter was in the air, sun rays beaming down, and all the stress of the week faded away. After a few video calls home showing their families the view, the friends agreed it was time to walk back down.

This is what makes Table Rock Trail so unique. Right behind Hartwick’s campus. More than. a hiking path. A rite of passage. A retreat. And during the most stressful parts of the semester, a lifeline.

Oneonta, New York

Hartwick College is known for its diverse campus, beautiful landscape, and strong academic programs. But what most don’t know is that just down the hill lies another aspect of the student experience: downtown Oneonta, with its shops, restaurants, music, and local culture that give campus life an added dimension.

For students without a vehicle on campus, Hartwick’s Student Government Association (SGA) has a contract with the Oneonta public transit that offers students free transportation throughout town during the academic year. All you need is your Hartwick ID.

For more transportation information, please visit the OPT Rides website.

Berk Ersal ’28 and his friends are sophomores attending Hartwick College. They start every Sunday morning with a 15-minute walk, over to the Yellow Deli to grab their favorite sub sandwiches to start their morning.

After a morning debrief, they head over to the popular Southside Mall using their Hartwick ID to catch the bus. They watch a free movie at the Southside Mall Cinema, complimentary with a free drink and small popcorn, which is available every other weekend for students, thanks to the SGA.

Ersal indicates, “Having the ability to get around town for free is very convenient and being able to enjoy things like a free movie every weekend after a long week of classes is also very great for my work-life balance!”

Southside Mall is home to a variety of shopping options, including Bath & Body Works, T.J. Maxx, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Whether you’re an athlete looking for new gear, just shopping for new clothes, or even just looking to get a bite to eat, Southside Mall has it all!

After the movies, everyone heads back onto the bus to go on Main Street. Main Street is the heart and pride of Oneonta. It is home to various food spots such as Tino’s Pizza and Sal’s Pizzeria for all the pizza lovers. There’s also Tiger Sushi and Tokyo Cuisine, which offer a mix of Asian and Japanese-style dishes, such as hibachi and shrimp rolls. Places like The Yellow Deli and Wise Guys Sammy’s are great spots to grab a quick sub sandwich if you’re on the move.

Ryan Jones ’26 expresses, “In all my four years of being here, my favorite experience of downtown Oneonta is definitely the food spots. You can pretty much get whatever you like, from Chinese to Italian cuisine to just a normal sandwich. I have had many great experiences with family and friends going out to eat.”

Other than the food spots, downtown Oneonta has a lot to offer with its unique stores, such as The Magic Box, where they sell crystals and spiritual items, The Underground Attic, which offers different vintage clothing and gifts, and The Artisan’s Guild, which sells handmade items from local artists around Oneonta.

The friends end up going to The Vinyl Music Vault to find their favorite artists’ vinyls to hang around their dorm rooms. After a long Saturday, the friends walk back to campus to conclude their night.

The bottom line: students at Hartwick College aren’t limited to campus life alone. The College extends well beyond Oyaron Hill, blending character, vibrant student experiences, and rich history to create a lively connection between Hartwick and the community.
