Theatre Arts Department Overview

The Department of Theatre Arts believes in fostering theatre makers, not followers, through a well-rounded education that develops skills central to a 21st-century artistic market. While we encourage students to select a primary pathway within the Theatre Major, every student who graduates with a Hartwick theatre degree will earn experience in directing, acting, technical skills, dramaturgy, and more.

The department annually produces 2 faculty directed plays, senior thesis performances, and co-produces The 24 Hour Play Festival.
For show information or to reserve tickets call 607–431–4227 or email theatre@hartwick.edu.

Mission Statement: Hartwick’s Department of Theatre Arts engages undergraduate students in the creative, intellectual, and experiential practice of theatre within a liberal arts education. We prepare students to become versatile theatre practitioners equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience to pursue careers as independent and collaborative artists capable of pursuing advanced education and/or working in the performing arts and allied professions.

Please note: Hartwick College focuses on offering fall, January, and spring term undergraduate courses in person, however circumstances may require us to offer a small number of courses in this department through distance education. In times of emergency, following regulatory guidelines, all classes may temporarily need to be delivered through distance education, including online. We also offer a slate of courses online in the summer to help our students make progress towards their degrees. With support from an academic advisor, students needing particular courses may have other online options as well. If you have questions about the way courses are delivered in your program, please contact your Department or Program Chair.

Exciting Student Outcomes

Hartwick’s theatre arts students win regional and national awards, complete internships across the country and are well-prepared for graduate school and employment. Hartwick students have the opportunity to present their work at the regional theater portion of national Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). Six alumni premiered an original production in ANT Fest. The festival highlights work by indie-theater makers and new talent. It is sponsored by Ars Nova Hub in New York City.
