Northeast Experience

Hartwick College’s Northeast Experience offers students from around the world the opportunity to study in Oneonta, New York, USA for either one semester or a full academic year. In addition to their classes, participants in the Northeast Experience enjoy a cultural immersion program that includes travel to various destinations in the Northeast.

The Center for Global Education

It is the mission of the Center for Global Education to provide the Hartwick community with opportunities for global engagement that foster intercultural understanding, ethical and inclusive practices, and an appreciation for diverse perspectives.

SERVICES

Visa support: We process your I-20 and help you stay compliant with all U.S. federal regulations.

Orientation: We provide a pre-arrival orientation that includes virtual meetings to help you connect with us and with Hartwick students before you arrive on campus. We also provide a fun, two-day orientation to help you learn your way around, make friends, and understand all the support services available at Hartwick.

Cultural programming: Throughout the academic year, we have seminars, career support, performances, cultural celebrations, and short excursions to local events and attractions.

Global Ambassadors: All international students are connected with a Global Ambassador, who is a returning Hartwick student trained to provide support and help connect new students to the Hartwick community.

Check-ins: Northeast Experience students have regular check-ins with the Global Education staff to make sure that their needs are being met.

Health and safety: We have the on-campus Perella Health Center which is staffed by medical and mental health professionals who provide physical and mental health care. We also have a Campus Safety office which provides a safe and secure environment for all on campus.

Career Planning: Our Career Coaches are prepared to work with students in practicing interviews, writing resumes, and knowing how to talk with potential employers and graduate schools about your experiences studying in the U.S.

Our Location

Founded in 1797, Hartwick College is one of the most historic institutions of higher education in the United States. From a beautiful hillside location in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains in New York, Hartwick’s campus offers a view to behold, especially during the transition from summer to fall when leaf foliage turns yellow/gold.

Academic Programs

Hartwick College offers 45 courses of study, four pre-professional programs, six cooperative programs, and certifications. Students in Northeast Experience at Hartwick may choose from many classes offered to our degree-seeking students and will enroll in these classes alongside Hartwick students. With an average class size of 16, students learn in small groups and build personal relationships with Hartwick’s world class faculty.

Excursions and Activities

We organize excursions to places like New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, Niagara Falls, and the Catskill Mountains. Students can participate in some of our more than 60 clubs, join intramural sports teams, and attend our many campus programs, community service opportunities, and sporting events. Northeast Semester students have access to academic advising, the library, the fitness center, and can enjoy art and musical performances, plays, lectures, movie nights, and connections to the rest of the student body, including international students from over 20 different countries.

Accommodations and Dining

Students in Hartwick College’s Northeast Experience program are guaranteed on-campus housing in our residence halls. Here, you’ll be part of our secure and vibrant community with access to all the campus privileges available to degree-seeking students.

Northeast Experience students also have the option of residing at Hartwick College’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus, which provides students with opportunities for hands-on research, academic study, and self-discovery. Pine Lake is a place to learn about the natural environment, the history of human land use, and much more. Students and guests can live in and learn in a natural lakeside setting, with several rustic and sustainably-built lodging options.

Students enjoy our excellent dining facilities with unlimited access to Hartwick’s all-you-can-eat dining hall, The Commons; our coffee shop, John Christopher Café; and our grab-and-go grill, Table Rock Café. Customized menus are available for all those who have medically-supervised dietary needs—everything from a complete individual menu to minor accommodations to the current menu options.

The program fee is $15,000 US per semester, which includes:

  1. -Tuition and fees (except for lab, studio or other special course-related fees)
  2. -On-campus housing in double occupancy rooms (students seeking the more expensive single occupancy should indicate their interest during application)
  3. -Meal plan (17 meals per week)
  4. -Support from the Global Education staff and student Global Ambassadors
  1. -Airport pick-up and drop-off service
  2. -Library and computer lab access
  3. -Access to on-campus athletic facilities, sporting events, and laundry facilities
  4. -Excursions to selected destinations can include: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Boston, the Adirondack Mountains, as well as day trips to nearby locations to experience local traditions. Excursions change each semester.

-Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (strong preference for students who have completed at least one semester at another college or university)

4. Short essay explaining why you want to study at Hartwick and how you wish to apply your experience at Hartwick upon return to your home institution  
5. TOEFL or IELTS Official Score Report or Home University Approved TOEFL Score  
6. University transcripts  
7. Submit bank statement from a sponsor demonstrating that you have sufficient funds to pay for the program.
