Twins Learn Life Lessons at Center For Craft Food & Beverage

Twins Mira and Michi Dinh know that not every lesson they learn is taught inside the classroom.

“Seeing how people work together at the Center for Craft Food & Beverage has had a big impact on how I’ll go to the workplace,” said Michi, ’24, a public health major. “Seeing how they talk through the steps and show compassion for each other is something I want to take into my career.”

Mira ’25, a nursing major, agrees. “It’s not just about work, the staff asks about your well-being. I’m learning how to advocate for myself and for other workers, and in a hospital, where there are so many patients and not enough nurses, knowing how to advocate will make everyone happier at work.”

The twins, who are international students from Vietnam, enjoyed last year’s summer job at Hartwick’s Center For Craft Food & Beverage (CCFB) so much that they returned once more this summer.

"Mira and Michi have been an absolute pleasure to work with. Not only do they take pride in their work, but they are interested and invested in the community that the CCFB partners with. Our team loves having them around!"

Professor Harmonie Bettenhausen

Director of the Center for Craft Food & Beverage

As student workers, Mira and Michi were initially hired as temporary workers during the busy season. “During the summer, we see an increased volume of raw grains needing analysis due to small grains harvesting across the country,” explained Bettenhausen. “We see all types of small grains and they need very specific quality analyses. Mira and Michi excelled at this and so they were trained on other analyses and tasks for malt quality.”

In addition, they help prepare samples for daily client malt analyses and assist with research to develop new standard operating procedures for new equipment.

“It’s our second year at the Craft Food and Beverage Center,” said Mira. “We love working with Professor Bettenhausen and everyone in the lab. They’re so helpful, and if you make a mistake, they let you work through it and fix it.”
