LGBTQ at Hartwick

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging supports you and is here to make sure you feel supported and that you matter at Hartwick. Our students hail from all corners of the earth, and each carries with them their own understanding and expression of their personal gender and sexuality. We honor and celebrate these as critical components of our engaged, inclusive community.

At Hartwick, we strive to provide an environment that promotes academic and personal growth and development of LGBTQ and Ally community members on our campus, to assure unrestricted access to all aspects of the college, and to serve as a vehicle for the creation of a campus environment free from prejudice, bigotry, harassment, and violence and hospitable for all members.

Student Organizations

Student organizations also provide a great way to meet other LGBTQ students and allies. Get involved socially or politically. Check out the student organization, Hartwick Identity Alliance (HIA), Hartwick’s LGBTQ & Ally student organization. HIA has meeting space located on the 5th floor of Dewar Union, join HIA in making it the perfect space for you.

Pride Communities

National Resources - Coming Out

Coming out is a process of open-mindedness and understanding the value of one’s sexual or gender identity. This process happens in a variety of ways and occurs at different ages for different people. Generally, coming out includes both seeking and sharing one’s identity, and it is a very personal experience. Coming out can be one of the most empowering and satisfying decisions a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender person can make.

If you’re thinking of coming out, keep these things in mind and please review the following resources. We have professional staff who can meet individually with students who are dealing with coming out to themselves, roommates, family, faculty, and friends.
