Public Health Requirements

Public Health Major Requirements

Students majoring in public health must complete at least 38 credits, including:

  • PUBH 100 Foundations of Public Health (3 credits)
  • PUBH 110 Global Public Health (3 credits)
  • PUBH 200 Epidemiology (4 credits)
  • BIOL 163 Human Biology (4 credits)
    (or BIOL 206, 207, 210, 304, 306, 312, 314, 315, 319, 320, 344, or PSYC 305)
  • MATH 108 Statistics (3 credits)
    (or PSYC 291 or SOCI 383)
  • POSC 292 Public Policy (3 credits)
    (or POSC 290 or POSC 320 or SOCI 350 Healthcare Policy)
  • PHIL 336 Ethics (3 credits)
    (or PHIL 150 Healthcare Ethics or PHIL 250 or PHIL 250 Moral Psychology)
  • 12 credits of approved courses that form a Concentration in an area of Public Health.
  • At least 3 courses (minimum 9 credits) must be taken at the 300-level or above (not including PUBH 490 and 495; this may include core courses).
  • PUBH 495 Public Health Internship (2 credits)
    (or RELS 365 Near Death Experience or an approved Nursing Clinical experience or approved Internship in another discipline)
  • PUBH 490 Senior Capstone in Public Health (3 credits)

Public Health Minor Requirements

Students minoring in public health must complete 20 credits, including:

  • PUBH 100 Foundations of Public Health (3 credits)
  • PUBH 110 Global Public Health (3 credits)
  • PUBH 200 Epidemiology (4 credits)
  • 10 credits of approved courses that form a Concentration in an area of Public Health
  • At least 1 course (minimum 3 credits) must be taken at the 300-level or above.

Public Health Sample Concentrations

Students majoring and minoring in public health must complete coursework drawn from other disciplines in at least two Academic divisions and that focus on a specific area of public health.

Students are free to design these in consultation with their advisor in the Public Health program, or to use one of the following examples. These examples are designed for Public Health majors; students minoring in Public Health should consult with their advisors about how to adapt these to the minor requirements.

Epidemiology (17-18 credits)

  • (Take one): BIOL 202 Concepts of Biology w/Lab or BIOL 306 Microbiology or BIOL 314 Immunology or BIOL 344 Pathophysiology (3-4 credits)
  • (Take one): CHEM 105 General, Organic & Biochemistry w/Lab or CHEM 107 General Chemistry I w/Lab (4 credits)
  • MATH 121 Single-Variable Calculus (4 credits)
  • (Take one): SOCI 322 Population & Ecology or SOCI 381 Sociology of Health and Medicine

Health Administration & Policy (15 credits)

  • (Take one): BUSA 230 Organizational Behavior or POSC 210 State & Local Government (3 credits)
  • CISC 160 Database Concepts (3 credits)
  • ECON 150 Health Economics (3 credits)
  • (Take one): HIST 283 Western Medicine Since 1500 or RELS 250 Alternative Medicine or RELS 341 Religion and Medicine (3 credits)
  • (Take one): POSC 320 or SOCI 350 Healthcare Administration or SOCI 381 (3 credits)

Global Health (15-16 credits)
